Spring Trip Update- Only a few spaces available

The deadline to turn in commitment forms and your $100 deposit to reserve a space for the Spring Trip to Washington D.C. and Busch Gardens Williamsburg, VA was Friday, February 17th. However there are about 10 spaces still available. The details about the trip are contained in this presentation( Spring Trip 2012 Information ).

If you are interested you need to contact Rod Morton immediately. The last few spaces will be on a first come, first served basis. When these spaces are gone, you will be placed on a waiting list.

Chaperones Needed for Spring Trip

Chaperones (especially male chaperones) are still needed for the Spring Trip on April 2-4. The cost for chaperones will be approximately $200 if you share a hotel room with another chaperone, and approximately $325 if you want your own hotel room. This price includes bus transportation, hotel accommodations, tickets to all of the events (Medieval Times, NY City Ballet, and Busch Gardens), and the meals that are included in the trip (breakfast Tuesday and Wednesday, dinner all three evenings); see the Spring Trip 2012 Information for details. The next Scrips order will be placed at noon on Tuesday, February 14th. Please get your orders in before that deadline. Cards will be available for pick up by Monday, February 20th. Please see the Fundraising page on the PC Band Website or contact Don Minnick for more information.

Our annual spring pizza sale fundraiser started on Friday, February 10. All orders and money are due in by Friday, March 2. A pizza and gourmet food order form went home with your student last week. Please click on this Pizza Sale Info Sheet link for all the information about this fundraiser. This is a great opportunity for students to add to their student account funding, just in time for the Spring trip.

If you missed the meeting last Monday, please click on this link and view the Spring Trip 2012 Information that was presented. The details and activities planned for the trip are explained in this presentation. The final cost will be between $340 and $350 per student, depending on the number of participants. This trip is open to ALL band students who have participated in any of our programs this year.

You can download a Commitment Form and have your student deposit it in the band office mailbox, or mail it to:

You must include a non-refundable deposit of $100.

The Commitment Form and $100 deposit MUST BE RECEIVED BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17th. These requests and orders are also due FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17th. All checks should be made payable to the Panther Creek Band Boosters.

Chaperones Needeed March 21

The Symphonic Band and Concert Band will be competing at Heritage High School on March 21. Chaperones are needed for this event, which will be held during part, if not all, of the work day. Contact Rod Morton if you can volunteer, or if you need more details.

Indoor Guard and Drumline Programs

After months of preparation, practicing, and rehearsals, indoor program competitions have begun! This past Saturday the first competition of the season was held at West Johnston HS where our winter guard had a great first run and finished 4th in their class! The drum line finished in 3rd place with the highest music score of the day!

If you'd like to see what the indoor programs are all about, you can cheer them on and watch a competition on:

March 24 Green Hope HS ( guard and drumline)

Mr. Robinson Recognized for Achievements

We always thought that we had two of the best band directors ever but did you know that they have been recognized for their achievements this year by others?

Mr. Robinson was named one of the "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" by the School Band and Orchestra Association. Each state selects one band/orchestra director to represent them. He was chosen to represent the entire state of North Carolina. Congratulations!

We know how many nights and weekends that you give up for our band students and we appreciate all you do.

Teaching Philosophy:
I spend the majority of my energy teaching my students to engage in their education. I look for ways that students can step up and become leaders. I teach my students that leadership involves giving. The success in my classroom comes from the idea that we all have to succeed for the group to succeed. We are only as strong as our weakest link. All students in the ensemble learn to care for everyone’s progress. I see my students as potential teacher/leaders. I ask them to teach each other in section rehearsals and to look for ways to elevate all of the musicians in their sections. When students think that “we-us” is more important than “I-me,” we will have students that go into the community looking to serve not be served.

Making A Difference In Students’ Lives:
If we are fortunate, we will have three or four great teachers in our lives; teachers who were able to touch something down deep inside us and who really determined our thinking about everything. Perhaps they confirmed a certain belief pattern, or influenced the way we handled problems, or simply gave us the encouragement we needed to succeed. I was lucky to have two outstanding teachers help mentor me in my early years, Jesse Holton (band director) and Lisa McIver (choral director). I wanted to follow in their footsteps and use them as models in developing my own style of teaching.

Most Important Lesson Learned:
My final thought would be that in both teaching and learning, you must remain persistent. Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser said it best: Engagement in one’s education and then sharing it with others offers an instruction manual of success. It must be constantly studied and practiced. One year in my class is certainly not going to transform anyone’s life-ingrained habits, nor should it. It is merely a taste of what is possible by shifting to a we/us community and striving for excellence.
